Centrifugal Compressor Casing Parting Planes

The horizontally split casings of large centrifugal compressors require a parting-plane sealant tolerant of the process gas internally and capable of clean removal at the next overhaul. BIRKOSIT (900°C, 250 bar butt joints) is the standard specification for sound surfaces with damage not exceeding 0.2 mm. Where surface damage is deeper, FILLING 1000 (≤0.5 mm damage, 950°C, 275 bar) or FILLING 2000 (≤1.0 mm damage) is correct, used in combination with FILLING Basic on the remaining surface.

Reciprocating Compressor Cover Joints

Reciprocating compressors have multiple cover joints opened during routine maintenance: valve covers, cylinder head joints, distance piece end covers, and packing gland covers. These joints operate at lower temperatures than turbine parting planes. Arexons Motorsil D Red — a one-component RTV silicone — is suited to these cover and housing joints where a formed-in-place gasket is appropriate. Application suitability must be confirmed against operating conditions, fluid type, and temperature for each specific joint.
